File # 2021-37118

On October 2, 2021, the Nanaimo RCMP responded to a report of an assault with a weapon. The incident occurred just before 11 pm on Saturday October 2, 2021, on Museum Way in downtown Nanaimo.

Police were told that a 24-year-old homeless man had been struck with a metal pipe or similar object and was transported to hospital with head and facial trauma.

Investigators learned from witnesses that, about an hour earlier, the man had been sitting on Museum Way when three male suspects dressed in dark clothing approached him. Witnesses said they asked him a question and then struck him with object that resembled a metal pipe. The suspects ran in the direction of Gordon St and were last seen getting into a black minivan that fled toward Terminal Avenue.

This appears to be an unprovoked attack on a person in our community who was unable to defend himself, said Constable Simon Gallimore, Nanaimo Media Relations Officer.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this attack to contact investigators. In addition, police would ask that any private citizens or businesses who have dashcam or other video footage from the area bounded by Museum Way, Commercial St, Terminal Ave and Gordon St between the hours of 9PM to 10:30PM on October 2, 2021 to also notify investigators.
