Traffic stop nets arrest on Canada-wide warrant

Any police officer who works in Traffic Services knows to expect the unexpected when stopping motorists on BC’s highways.
Such was the case last week when the Unit Commander of West Pacific Region Traffic Services was conducting speed enforcement along Highway 16 near Terrace. A vehicle was stopped for a speeding offence and the driver produced a novice driver’s licence. The officer made a number of queries and quickly learned that the driver was wanted Canada-wide for several serious offences that occurred in the Yukon in 2018.
The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the Terrace RCMP Detachment where he was remanded into custody.
This incident demonstrates how quickly a
routine traffic stop turned into an arrest of a wanted individual and provided assistance to a Detachment in the Yukon to bring a serious investigation closer to conclusion. This is one of many ways in which members of BC RCMP Traffic Services keep our communities and roadways safer for everyone.
If you know of someone wanted by police for a serious crime, please contact your local police or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
