The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) is investigating the sudden death of a child in Tofino, B.C.
On December 13th 2020 the Tofino RCMP assisted BC Ambulance after it was reported that a child had suffered injuries on the Tyhistanis Reserve and was in need of medical assistance. Tragically on December 16th the child succumbed to their injuries.
The investigation was initially started by the Tofino RCMP working alongside the Vancouver Island General Investigation section, however VIIMCU has since assumed conduct.

This investigation is in its preliminary stages, and is expected to be a long, thorough and involved process involving many agencies including BC Coroners service
Other children from the residence have been temporarily placed in other residences while this investigation is taking place.
The BC Coroners Service is also conducting a concurrent fact-finding investigation into this unexpected death. Due to the privacy of the deceased, under the Coroners Act, the deceased’s name will not be released.
The RCMP and the BC Coroners Service have no further information for release at this time.
