Week in review December 24 to 31

Lake Country Detachment responded to 58 files from December 24 to December 31. Below are a few highlights from the week.

December 24 between 4:00 am and 6:00 am in the area of Crimson Rd. and Beacon Hill Cres., two males were seen on several house surveillance cameras trying vehicle door handles. A few vehicles were found unlocked and the males rifled through them taking change and other small items. Police attended and located two males in the area. They have been identified, removed from the area and the investigation continues. If anyone has surveillance or knows about these incidents please contact Lake Country Detachment referring to file # 2023-75326 Crimson Rd or 2023-75330 Beacon Rd.

December 27 a female was breaching her release conditions by attending a residence on Coral Beach Rd. The conditions are from a theft, break and enter that occurred earlier in December at that residence. The suspect is well known to police and the caller. Patrols were conducted and they were not located. File has been forwarded to Crown Counsel requesting an arrest warrant.

Later December 27 there was a two-vehicle collision at Oceola Rd and Highway 97. A North bound driver attempted to turn left onto Oceola Rd however did not predict the timing correctly and was hit by a South bound car. There were no injuries reported and the South bound lanes were blocked briefly. The driver who attempted the left-hand turn was issued a violation ticket and both vehicles were towed away.

December 28 BC Ambulance called police as they had come across a very intoxicated male who was wandering out on to Highway 97 near Oceola Rd trying to stop traffic. Police attended and found the male as described. He was transported to Kelowna City cells for his safety as there was no one to care for him, he was no condition to effectively care for himself and clearly was not making sound decisions. He was released without charge.

December 29 members of the public were calling in that a male was walking out into traffic on Woodsdale Rd. and appeared very intoxicated. Police attended and found it was the same individual from December 28th. He was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place. Officers drove to his residence however no one there would commit to caring for him. Again, as he was in no condition to care for himself or make sound decisions and was lodged in Kelowna RCMP cells for a period of time for his safety and released without charge.

December 30 a car parked on Celeste Rd was rifled through with insurance papers and sunglasses stolen. Owner is not sure if the car doors were locked or unlocked. Police are asking the public to check their vehicles to ensure they are secure. An unlocked vehicle is a crime of opportunity that is generally preventable.

December 30 a member of the public called 911 requesting police check on their neighbor as they could hear moaning coming from a residence on Pelmewash Parkway. Police gained entry and found an elderly individual in medical distress. BC Ambulance attended and transported this individual to hospital. Without this level of concern, it may have been a far worse situation. It is great to see how Lake Country residents look after each other.

In 2023 Lake Country RCMP responded to 3290 calls for service. In those calls were approximately 89 impaired related files, 44 theft from vehicles, 40 shoplifting, 29 break and enter, 19 possession of stolen property, 75 assaults, and 78 bylaw related offences to name a few.

On top of the reported calls for service, Lake Country officers wrote approximately 950 traffic warnings and 615 violation tickets in an effort to educate drivers and enforce road safety in the community. BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) have also been supporting Lake Country RCMP in working to make the streets of Lake Country safer. BCHP impounded 32 vehicles for excessive speed for 7 days and issued violation tickets to the drivers. BCHP officers also impounded 9 other vehicles for alcohol and drug related offences. These offences are over and above what would be considered typical violation tickets under the Motor Vehicle Act.
