Back to school road safety
2021-09-06 08:30 PDT
The school season is once more upon us, and that means thousands of children and youth will be flooding North Van streets this week. As children make their way to school, North Vancouver RCMP officers will be back out in full force patrolling school zones and crosswalks, and making sure drivers are paying attention.
"Children are returning to classes all across our community, and that means school zones will be full of students during the morning and afternoon commute," said Inspector Vaz Kassam of the North Vancouver RCMP. "We're reminding everyone that school zone speed limits are back in effect, and asking drivers to be especially alert for school children along their route."

Drivers are also reminded that while 30 km/h school zones are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days, 30 km/h playground zones are in effect every day from dawn to dusk.

Common offences under the BC Motor Vehicle Act around schools and parks include:
- Speed in school zone or playground zone 1-20 km/h over - $196
- Speed in school zone or playground zone 21-40 km/h over - $253
- Fail to obey school guard or school patrol: $167
- Fail to stop for School Bus: $368
- Fail to yield to pedestrian at crosswalk: $167
Pedestrians have a role to play as well. Always "see and be seen". Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the road, wear high visibility colours, and remove earbuds and headphones so you can hear what’s going on around you.

"Our hope is that the attention drivers give to following the rules during this week won't fade as the school year progresses," said Inspector Kassam. "We need to keep our kids safe every day of the year."
