Nanaimo is located in the mid-island region, on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.  Nanaimo RCMP is the largest detachment on the island, and is led by Superintendent Cameron Miller, its Officer in Charge. It is also one of the largest detachments in the Province, and as of January 2020 it is staffed by 156 police officers, who are supported by 63 civilian staff.

The Nanaimo RCMP police a population of over 100,000 people (2021 stats), and responded to almost 47,000 calls for service in 2020. The detachment responds to calls from Cedar in the south (not including the Nanaimo Airport), to Nanoose Bay in the north. The detachment area includes City of Nanaimo, Snuneymuxw First Nation, Snaw-naw-as First Nation, the District of Lantzville, and Regional District of Nanaimo Electoral Areas A and C.

Nanaimo RCMP detachment has a number of sections which support the front line police officers.  General Duty officers respond to calls for service in the first instance and rely on specialized units for assistance.  These include:

The main goal of the officers and staff is to increase community safety.  This is achieved by a variety of programs and through community partnerships. The detachment has developed a close relationship with a number of community partners including mental health agencies, to facilitate contact with persons who require assistance in a coordinated manner.  The Domestic Violence Unit works with community partners to ensure victims of these crimes receive support, while taking on high risk investigations. Victim Services play a key role in assisting victims, and providing them information and support.  The Criminal Intelligence Unit gathers information to effectively combat Organized Crime and gang activity, and is supported by a Crime Analyst who helps focus police enforcement activity.  The Street Crimes and Projects Units target offenders over a wide spectrum of criminality and offences.

Nanaimo RCMP is also very pro-active in helping residents protect themselves from being victimized by crime. It operates many Crime Prevention Programs, a number of which are focused on protecting businesses, seniors and youth (see more under Volunteering Opportunities). Volunteers are a large component in the delivery of these programs and are a welcome addition to the team and provide local knowledge to many issues.
