Strengthening Community. Enhancing Partnerships

The Auxiliary Constable Program operates under the authority of the Police Services Division of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. It provides an opportunity for citizens to perform authorized activities that address the causes of and/or reduce the fear of crime and disorder.

PURPOSE

Auxiliary Constables, through their office, training, uniform and association with the police, achieve a level of credibility with the public that provides the police and community the opportunity to coordinate, facilitate, and implement community policing and crime prevention programs in areas that may not have the necessary community infrastructure to support public safety initiatives, or in environments that are not suitable for other volunteers.

Upon meeting the qualification standards, volunteers are recruited and trained to a level of proficiency which enables them to provide complementary assistance to on duty members of the RCMP. Upon successfully completing the extensive 150+ hours of theory and physical training, including two written exams administered by the Justice Institute of BC recruits are sworn in as RCMP Auxiliary Constables.

Accordingly, while on duty Auxiliary Constables have the full powers afforded to all Provincial Peace Officers in the execution of their duties.

Auxiliary Constables are issued essentially the same uniform and operational equipment as worn by regular members of the RCMP, with the addition of 'Auxiliary Constable' patches and without being armed. 

WHY VOLUNTEER AS AN AUXILIARY CONSTABLE?

The answer varies from one Auxiliary to another, but generally speaking it is their strong desire to serve our community and to make a difference. They choose to volunteer their time by policing our community, to make it a safer place for all families to live, businesses to flourish, visitors to experience and citizens to enjoy.

ACTIVITIES

All Auxiliary Constables commit to a minimum of 160 hours of voluntary service every year in order to remain in the program. They perform a wide range of activities including assisting with community events, crime prevention and safety programs, youth and senior initiatives, foot patrols, bike patrols, marine patrols and operational ride-alongs, to name a few.

The Auxiliary Program has provided valuable resources to major events in the City and District, such as:

Caribbean Days, Canada Day, Deep Cove Days, Edgemont Village Concerts, Clam Chowder Cook off, Family Day at NorthShore Auto Mall,    Lantern Festivals, Lynn Valley Days Festival.

Some of our most effective tools are having positive community relations, a professional police image, public education, and the ability to respond to the needs of our community. The Auxiliaries are an excellent resource in this capacity as they are responsible for educating the public on a number of community concerns such as graffiti, child find, auto crime, drug awareness, school safety programs, and Speed-Watch.

Basic requirements: 

• North Shore resident
• Canadian citizen
• 19 years of age
• High school diploma
• Class 5 BC driver's license
• Physically fit
• Be of good character
• Mature and responsible attitude
• Able to pass background security checks
• 160 hours service per year
• Two year commitment

Integrating into the Detchment an Auxiliary Constable's primary purpose is to participate in community policing services that relate to public safety and crime prevention.
