Important Information for Residents Returning to Williams Lake
2017-07-27 06:19 PDT
This afternoon, at 12:00 pm, the City of Williams Lake, the Williams Lake Indian Band and the Cariboo Regional District announced that the Evacuation order for Williams Lake, Sugarcane and surrounding area has been downgraded from an order to an Evacuation Alert. Not all areas of the Cariboo Regional District have been downgraded, please ensure your community does not still remain under evacuation order prior to returning.
For your own safety, we ask you stay out of evacuated areas until you are notified that it is safe to return.
Residents returning to Williams Lake may do so via Highway 97 from the north and south. Checkpoints will remain in place at key entry points into the city to ensure an orderly and safe re-entry. No entry to areas remaining under evacuation order will be permitted.
Be prepared for significant delays on travel routes.
RCMP are being supported by Canadian Armed Forces personnel, who will ensure information is provided that ensures your safety as you return to your community. These military personnel are assisting the RCMP to allow the RCMP the flexibility to assist in your re-entry and focus on core policing duties.
The RCMP have been patrolling evacuated areas 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to detect and deter criminality. Anyone who has concerns upon return to their home, are encouraged to report any issues to the non-emergency line for the Williams Lake RCMP at 250-392-6211. We appreciate your continued patience and cooperation as you return to respective homes and communities. Your safety remains a priority for us.
We understand evacuees from areas surrounding Williams Lake are anxious to return home, however Evacuation Orders remain in place for portions of the Cariboo Regional District. To avoid congestion and allow local residents and business owners to have the opportunity to settle back in, please do not return to the area until Evacuation Orders have been rescinded in your communities.
