Statement from Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards – City decision on policing

Surrey

2023-06-16 12:50 PDT

Earlier today Mayor Locke announced that Council has voted and reaffirmed their previous decision from December 2022 to retain the RCMP in Surrey.

With the City’s direction on policing now confirmed, the RCMP is fully prepared and ready to move forward in support of the plan to remain the police force of jurisdiction in the City of Surrey.

We remain committed to working alongside all parties involved in the policing transition to ensure a coordinated approach.

My top priority as Officer in Charge remains the same, and that is to ensure public and police officer safety, and deliver excellent, community-focused policing to the City of Surrey now and into the future.

I recognize the past five years have been challenging not only for the police officers and support staff who have worked through a tremendous amount of uncertainty, but also for the residents of Surrey who have sought clarity around the policing transition.

Surrey RCMP and SPS officers have worked together in the detachment over the past year and a half, and have done so with professionalism.

We look ahead to the coming days and weeks, with the top priority being the seamless continuation of our core policing services.

Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards
Surrey RCMP, Officer in Charge
