Surrey RCMP and partners launch road safety campaign

As parents and students settle into their school routine, the Surrey RCMP and its partners continue to promote road safety with education and enforcement campaigns aimed at high risk driving behavior.

Starting this week, the Surrey RCMP, in cooperation with ICBC, Surrey School Board, White Rock RCMP, and the Surrey Crime Prevention Society, will be launching another "Think of Me" campaign to remind both parents and drivers about school zone safety and the hazards of distracted driving.

Officers will be issuing drivers handmade warnings created by students as a visible reminder to "think of me" and "take a break from your phone" while driving. This campaign is in concert with September being distracted driving awareness month.

This campaign is a great opportunity to involve students in driving home the message that high risk driving behaviour, including distracted driving, is dangerous and can increase your risk of crashing, says Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann. Now that the school year has begun, drivers are encouraged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid distractions, especially around school zones.

More than 800 crashes occur every day in B.C., many of these caused by distracted driving, says Karen Klein, local ICBC road safety coordinator. No call or text is worth the risk. Distracted driving is a dangerous and preventable behaviour that we must all commit to ending.
