Three year old child falls through window

File # 2017-97930

On July 16th, 2017 at approximately 7:40pm, Surrey RCMP received a call of a child that fell out of a residential window in the 13900 block of 64A Avenue. Officers arrived on scene and the child was being treated by the Surrey Fire Services. The three year old child had been inside the home and fell through an open window which had a screen in it. The child fell from the second story to the patio below. There were a number of family members in the residence when the incident had occurred but no one was close enough to grab the child before she fell. The child was taken to hospital and will remain in hospital overnight for observation. The Ministry of Children and Family Services was advised and will be following up with the family. Thankfully, the injuries appear to be minor.

Window screens are not enough to prevent a child from falling through them. The Surrey RCMP responds to calls like this every year, some with serious injuries. Police recommend installing window guards above the ground floor level, moving furniture away from windows, and not underestimating a child’s mobility.
