North Vancouver RCMP invite the public to join Sgt. Peter DeVries and Dr. Rylan Simpson on twitter for a Tweet-Along this Friday, September 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit @nvanrcmp to follow along.
Sgt. DeVries will be hitting the road with Rylan Simpson, Ph.D. and Assistant Professor in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University. Dr. Simpson will be taking control of the North Vancouver RCMP's Twitter ). During the shift, they will be tweeting about the interactions Sgt. DeVries has with the public as he responds to calls, sharing their discussions about various topics that arise from these interactions, and inviting the public to participate by asking questions and sharing their own thoughts.
"This is a great opportunity for us," said Sgt. DeVries. "Police and academic partnerships present incredible opportunities for us to explore more effective and efficient ways of solving problems and providing community safety services." Dr. Simpson's research explores a wide range of topics related to policing, perceptions of police, police organizations, theories of crime, and experimental criminology. Evidence-based research from members of academia help inform policing policy and practices, while providing a valuable venue for knowledge exchange, said DeVries. "Our hope is that our Twitter following will tune in and weigh in with constructive questions and comments of their own."
A little more about Dr. Simpson
Dr. Simpson received his Ph.D. in Criminology, Law and Society from the University of California, Irvine. He has published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented his work for scholarly, policing, and government groups across the world. Motivated by frontline experiences, Dr. Simpson has also participated in more than 850 hours of police ride-alongs in Canada, Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
A little more about Sgt. DeVries
Sgt. DeVries has a B.A. in Literature with minors in Philosophy and Psychology. Prior to becoming a police officer, he worked as manager of a group home for adults with intellectual disabilities. With 22 years on the Force, Peter has worked frontline patrol, bicycle section, community policing, and as a public and police safety instructor. Recently he worked in the professional responsibility unit, and currently he is the Detachment's media spokesperson.
