Police look for information, suspects, in downtown break-ins

The Kamloops RCMP Detachment is enhancing its approach to business break and enters, in response to a recent crime spree in the city.

Over the last two weeks, from Feb. 12 to 25, 2024, Kamloops has had approximately 25 reports of business break and enters -- 12 of which have occurred downtown, and many involving smash and grabs.

The sudden uptick of break and enter reports is cause for concern and something we are taking extremely seriously, said Superintendent Jeff Pelley of the Kamloops RCMP Detachment. In response we have and continue to implement multi-faceted strategies, which include adding targeted proactive patrols, assigning teams of investigators to various areas based on data gathered and analyzed by our Criminal Intelligence and Crime Reduction units, and actively investigating known property crime offenders.

Since Feb. 12, officers have been working to advance investigations by obtaining and circulating security images captured, identifying suspicious people – particularly in the downtown core, and following up with suspects. At this time, it’s unknown if and which of the break-ins are related.

As we continue to work on identifying and arresting those responsible for this recent rash of break and enter reports, we continue to encourage the public to contact police if they have information or video that could be related, added Supt. Pelley. We also invite businesses to connect with our Crime Prevention Unit should they wish to discuss any additional tactics to help reduce their risk, including a safety analysis based on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).
