During September’s distracted driving enforcement, Burnaby RCMP handed out 917 tickets to drivers who are still not getting the message to leave their phone alone. In addition to a $368 fine, these drivers incurred 4 points on their licenses.
One distracted driver led police to 21 lbs of marijuana. During distracted driving enforcement, police stopped a male who was seen using his phone while driving. Once stopped, the officer noticed a smell of marijuana coming from the inside of the vehicle and subsequently found 21 lbs of marijuana. The marijuana was seized along with $1,000 in cash. A 28-year-old male and his 53-year-old mother, both of Vancouver, are now facing charges of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking.
Other notable cases included two separate instances of drivers playing Pokémon Go as they operated their vehicle. Another distracted driver had their vehicle impounded for 24 hours because he was smoking marijuana while talking on his phone. Not only was he driving while being distracted but he was under the influence of drugs which is a fatal combination. Four people who were driving while prohibited and using their electronic device in their vehicle were also taken off the road during distracted driving enforcement.
Burnaby RCMP spokesperson, Cpl. Daniela Panesar, says;
This enforcement showed some drivers are still not getting the message that driving distracted is as dangerous as driving impaired. You’re five times more likely to crash if you’re using your phone. Hopefully all of the drivers ticketed through September will learn to leave their phone alone.
