2017-11-01 14:13 PDT
On October 31 at approximately 11:10 pm, Burnaby police patrolling in a marked police car spotted a van parked at the tennis court parking lot off of Patterson Ave. The driver of the van then allegedly drove off over grass and the curb.
The police officer did not pursue the van, but did share a description to other officers in the area.
At approximately 11:35 pm it is alleged the suspect van was travelling eastbound on Dorset Street when a crash occurred with another marked police vehicle, transporting members of the Burnaby RCMP, as it travelled northbound on Macpherson Ave. The suspect male driver was treated on scene by Emergency Health Services, and later was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police officers involved in the crash have been medically assessed for non-life threatening injuries. The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attended to support the investigation of the crash between the police vehicle and the van. Burnaby General Duty section has the lead on the concurrent suspicious vehicle investigation.
The Independent Investigation Office of BC was notified, and has now asserted jurisdiction. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police at this time. Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the IIO BC at 1-855-446-8477.
Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be subject of independent investigation and verification by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit their website at www.iiobc.ca.
