Water Safety for Children
The RCMP would like to remind the public to always be mindful of young children around water such as backyard pools, kiddie pools and bathtubs.
Backyard pools are the number one location where children under five are most likely to drown. In most cases, the young victims were alone at the time and wandered into the water accidentally. Be mindful it only takes 1 inch of water for a small child to drown and that it often happens within a few seconds and silently.
Tips to reduce the risk of drowning:
- Install a four-sided fence with a self-closing/latching gate around the home pool
- Ensure rescue equipment such as a life preserver or long pole are available nearby pools
- Always stay within arms reach of your child when playing in or near water.
- Never leave your child unattended, not even for a moment to grab your phone or answer the door.
- Put your child in swimming classes. If you or your child’s guardians such as grandparents do not now know how to swim, take the time to learn as well.
- Know first aid and CPR
- Young children and weak swimmers should always wear life jackets in or around water
